COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently asked questions
How does the city matching work?

We score all 100 cities against your inputs. Your salary sets the affordability baseline. Your priorities shift the weighting toward schools, safety, or jobs. Your lifestyle filters out cities that don’t fit your climate or size preference. The top 20 scorers are your results.

What salary do I need to live comfortably in a new city?

It depends heavily on the city’s cost of living, your household size, and your lifestyle. As a general rule, housing should take no more than 28 to 30 percent of your gross income. Enter your salary above and the tool tells you instantly whether each city is comfortable, tight, or a stretch.

Why only 100 cities?

We filtered out cities with high crime, weak job markets, or cost of living that doesn’t work for middle-class families. These 100 cities cleared every bar we set — safety, schools, jobs, housing affordability, and quality of life.

Can I use this if I don’t have a job lined up yet?

Yes. Enter your current salary to see affordability, then use our Can I Afford This City tool to get a detailed budget breakdown for any city you’re considering. Both tools work even if you’re still in the research stage.

Is this tool really free?

Yes. No signup, no email, no credit card. We built this to help people make smarter relocation decisions. Use it as many times as you want.

What if my city isn’t in the results?

You can enter your current city for comparison even if it’s not in our top 100. The 100 result cities are the ones we’ve vetted and written detailed guides for. More cities are added as we publish more guides.
